Tutorial Dialog in an Equation Solving Intelligent Tutoring System
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new intelligent tutoring system is presented for the domain of solving equations. This system is novel, because it is an intelligent equation-solving tutor that combines a cognitive model of the domain with a model of dialog-based tutoring. The tutorial model is based on the observation of an experienced human tutor and captures tutorial strategies specific to the domain of equation-solving. In this context, a tutorial dialog is the equivalent of breaking down problems into simpler steps and asking new questions before proceeding to the next step. The resulting system, named E-tutor, was compared, via a randomized controlled experiment, to a traditional model-tracing tutor that does not engage students in dialog. Preliminary results using a very small sample size showed that E-tutor capabilities performed better than the control. This set of preliminary results, though not statistically significant, shows promising opportunities to improve learning performance by adding tutorial dialog capabilities to ITSs. The system is available at www.wpi.edu/~leenar/E-tutor.

An Annotated Corpus of Tutorial Dialogs on Mathematical Theorem Proving
Our goal is to develop a flexible dialog system for tutoring mathematical problem solving. Empirical findings in the area of intelligent tutoring show that flexible natural language dialog supports active learning. Therefore, we focus on the development of solutions allowing flexible dialog. However, little is known about the use of natural language in dialog settings in formal domains, such as...
متن کاملSimple but effective feedback generation to tutor abstract problem solving
To generate natural language feedback for an intelligent tutoring system, we developed a simple planning model with a distinguishing feature: its plan operators are derived automatically, on the basis of the association rules mined from our tutorial dialog corpus. Automatically mined rules are also used for realization. We evaluated 5 different versions of a system that tutors on an abstract se...
متن کاملExploring the Relationship between Self-Efficacy and the Effectiveness of Tutorial Interactions
In recent years, significant advances have been made in intelligent tutoring systems, and these advances hold great promise for adaptively supporting computer science (CS) learning. In particular, tutorial dialogue systems that engage students in natural language dialogue can provide rich, adaptive interactions. One promising approach for increasing the effectiveness of these systems is to adap...
متن کاملExpanding the Model-Tracing Architecture: A 3 Generation Intelligent Tutor for Algebra Symbolization
Following Computer Aided Instruction systems, 2 nd generation tutors are Model-Tracing Tutors (MTTs) (Anderson & Pelletier, 1991) which are intelligent tutoring systems that have been very successful at aiding student learning, but have not reached the level of performance of experienced human tutors (Anderson et al., 1995). To that end, this paper presents a new architecture called ATM ("Addin...
متن کاملPilot-Testing a Tutorial Dialogue System That Supports Self-Explanation
Previous studies have shown that self-explanation is an effective metacognitive strategy and can be supported effectively by intelligent tutoring systems. It is plausible however that students may learn even more effectively when stating explanations in their own words and when receiving tutoring focused on their explanations. We are developing the Geometry Explanation Tutor in order to test th...
